This book is concerned with the conceptual foundations of language and their application in two very important fields, reading and second language teaching. For the most part, the book focuses on a consideration of how human beings use and acquire language. Toward this end, basic ideas from a variety of disciplines, particularly linguistics, philosophy and psychology, are presented and evaluated. A mentalistic approach is used as the basis for the integration of such ideas into a unified language theory, and experimental research is included to the extent that it is illuminating to the basic issues under consideration. Because of its interdisciplinary emphasis, the book is appropriate for both students and professionals in psychology, linguistics, education, philosophy, communication and other language related fields.
