Excerpt

This little book for the most part limits itself to the Western tradition, and even there its coverage is highly selective. The emphasis on Scottish, and Irish material is a deliberate attempt to show their significance for the development of the mode.

I am grateful to students and colleagues in Edinburgh and elsewhere with whom over the years I have discussed numerous+00AD logical analysis. I should also like to thank Mr Archie Turnbull, Mrs L. Jones and Mr John M. Davidson of Edinburgh University Press for the help and advice which they willingly extended to me. The faults of the book are, of course, my own.

Now that it is completed, I should like to inscribe the book 'For Angus and the visual abstract'.
