I have chosen a few articles from among the many that I have written on contemporary events during the last nine years for presentation in this volume. My aim has been to provide the reader with a sort of conspectus of the successive phases of our economic development in the period. Only certain aspects are dealt with; but they are the aspects of central importance for the formation of public policy. I believe that if those responsible for economic policy lack a thorough understanding of what has been going forward in recent years, they will be unlikely to succeed in the tasks that lie before them.

I am grateful for the leave to publish these papers, given by the Committee for Economic Development, New York (No. 1), the International Monetary Fund (No. 2), The Financial Times (Nos. 3, 6, 8, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 24, 28, 29, 33, 35), The Banker's Magazine (Nos. 4, 5, 7, 19, 23), Dr. Erhard (No. 5), the Director (Nos. 9, 10, 18, 21, 27, 30), the Economic Journal (No. 11), the Institute of Municipal Treasurers and Accountants (No. 16), a firm of stock-brokers to whom I submitted monthly memoranda for private circulation (Nos. 22, 23, 25) and the Westminster Bank Review (No. 31).

I have ventured, on the kindly suggestion of Professor Tress, to add, at the end of this volume, a list of my writings (subject to certain exceptions, see p. 251) in the period from 1951 to 1959. The idea was that this list might be useful to a research-worker who was concentrating on some particular aspect or part of the period in question. It must be admitted that there is some repetition in this great mass of writing; but I believe that it will all stand up to scholarly scrutiny; and, once one begins such a compilation, it is difficult to resist the stamp-collector's urge to be inclusive.
