The story of a life so long, active and important as that of the subject of this biography might easily be made to extend over several volumes. I have not, however, attempted to follow Lord Bryce into all his activities. It has been my object to present a portrait of the man rather than a full catalogue of the events and transactions with which he was concerned, and but for the fact that this book contains a selection of letters, all that is here written might have been confined within the limits of a single not very bulky volume.

I am conscious that some criticism may be levelled against the proportions of this narrative. Lord Bryce's Parliamentary career has been dealt with somewhat cursorily, although it consumed a large measure of his intellectual energies during twenty-seven years of active manhood. So much, however, of a politician's effort is necessarily thrown into the common stock of his party, so much is good honest team work and so much again belongs rather to the political history of the times than to the sphere of biography, that I felt myself justified in exercising compression here. Again there has been no attempt to give a full and adequate account of Lord Bryce's most important publications, partly because these are familiar and partly from a fear that, were such an effort to be made, the reader's mind might be diverted . . .
