It is always a difficult task to compile a guidebook so that it suits every taste. People are interested in a country from so many different angles. Some people care only for castles or ruins. Others are interested in modern industry. Some prefer to spend their days in art museums or in studying history, while others are interested in scenery or in sports.

Within the covers of this volume, we have endeavored to present the various districts of Switzerland in such a way that there is something for every taste. We have tried to mention something of the past as well as something of the present, to describe not only what the country looks like but to tell also a bit about the people themselves. We have suggested a few trips among the many that may be taken. We have given a few of the gastronomic specialties of each region. We have described the spas and some of the incomparable opportunities for sport offered by the mountaineering and the skiing.

But naturally it is impossible to encompass within such a short space a complete description of all the riches of this small country, with its vivid history, its modern technical progress and its magnificent scenery.

However, we will have achieved our purpose if, after a perusal of these pages, the reader is filled with a desire to explore the country more profoundly.
