SCENE: A BARREN CLIFF

ACT I.

Enter four persons, one (PROMETHEUS) evidently the prisoner of another (HEPHAISTOS), while two are burly brutes (KRATOS and BIA), carrying various implements, such as hammers, rivets, bolts, chains, and wedges.

KRATOS.

SO we are come to the last reach of earth,

To Scythia's shore, a man-forbidden waste;

And thou, Hephaistos, since thou must fulfil

Thy sire's commands, shalt nail this villain here

Unto these jagged cliffs, and bind him fast

With bonds unbreakable as adamant.

Thy glory, flame of all-devising fire,

He stole and gave to mortals; for such wrong

He must unto the gods yield punishment,

Learning to love the tyranny of Zeus

And cease his benefactions to mankind.
