The first draft of this work was written during a six-month sojourn in Munich from April to September 1977. During that time my family and I experienced great kindness and warm hospitality from many people. Professor Wolfhart Pannenberg and his wife gave generously of their time, and cared for us with genuine solicitude. Their home was often open to us, and their friendship sustained us in many ways. The good people of the Church of the Ascension, led by Father Hank Wilson and his wife, Flo, were essential to our wellbeing, as a community of worship and friendship. Bob and Kristi Nowak were also important, and Kristi Nowak, Ph.D. read part of the draft for intelligibility. My colleagues at Stanford, the Rev. Wendy Smith, Ph.D., and the Rev. Ernlé Young, Ph.D. made my leave possible by caring for our church in my absence, and they, along with countless Stanford students, contributed insights and helped to clarify parts of the argument. An earlier draft of the work was delivered as the Lois Lewis Memorial lectures at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto; I thank Fr.
