Excerpt

Preliminary studies of The Parlement of the Thre Ages, for a thesis prepared under the guidance of the late Miss Dorothy Everett at Lady Margaret Hall, convinced the present editor that the poem well merited a fuller apparatus than lay within the scope of Sir Israel Gollanc'z edition in 1915 for his series of Select Early English Poems.

I owe my thanks to all those who have helped me in preparing this edition. To Miss Everett I am especially indebted for the help she gave so generously in the earlier stages of this work; her advice and stimulus were invaluable. I am indebted also to Dr. Mabel Day for reading my typescript in its original form, for many helpful comments, and for advice in reducing and reshaping the edition; to Professor Angus McIntosh for some useful suggestions; to Mr. R. W. Burchfield for help in preparing the edition for the press; and to Members of the Council of the Early English Text Society for their advice and criticism during the various stages of the production of this book.

To the Trustees of the British Museum I am obliged for permission to print the two versions of the poem and to reproduce the plates which form the frontispiece.
