Synopsis

This companion volume to Moyle's acclaimed 1987 book Tongan Music provides the most comprehensive published account of the music of western Polynesia's largest island group. Combining extensive fieldwork and exhaustive coverage of historical sources and museum holdings, the book features a thorough examination of songs, song texts and translations, dances, children's songs, and musical instruments.

Excerpt

This book began life as a doctoral thesis (Moyle MS 1971) completed seventeen years ago. In the intervening period, additional historical information has come to hand, further recordings have been located, and research conducted in the neighbouring islands of Lau, Tonga and Niue. The original fieldwork lasted some twenty-seven months between 1966 and 1969, and has additionally provided the material for several published papers and two records (see Bibliography).
