The Mind-Body Problem: An Opinionated Introduction

Excerpt

This book is based on lectures on the philosophy of mind that I have given and developed over many years, at Sydney University, at the University of California at Irvine, at Franklin and Marshall College, and most recently at Yale University. The questions and comments of students have been a continuous stimulus.

I thank Peter Anstey for scholarly assistance; Keith Lehrer for swiftly taking up my tentative idea of making an introductory book out of the lectures so that, in a moment, I had a contract on my desk; Sarah Warner, my acquisitions editor; David Toole for his magnificent copyediting; Kim Sterelny, who kindly read the whole manuscript and made many valuable suggestions; and the anonymous referees for Westview Press. But above all I would like to thank Bill Lycan, whose thinking about the mind, together with his friendship, has meant so much to me over the years. I dedicate the book to him and his wife, Mary.
