Excerpt

This volume of essays contains four that were originally published in Scribner's Magazine and two hitherto unpublished. The material for these two and for two of the previously published essays, "What Am I?" and "What Shall I Believe?" was originally presented in the form of lectures at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. The four that already have been published are now republished because of the request of some of my friends and colleagues that they be placed in more permanent and accessible form. They are also republished, together with the two new essays, because they represent the endeavor to discuss in popular form certain problems that are vital to any one who reflects about the nature of himself and the effect of heredity and environment on himself, about the nature of knowledge, and about fundamental questions of conduct and religious belief.
