Shortly before midnight one summer evening in Matagalpa, anesthetized by the twilight while my mother thought I was studying ratio and proportion problems and verbal declensions, Winnetou died. Old Shatterhand, with whom the Indian had explored all geographies and emotions, provided they were difficult, refused to believe he was dead.

If Old Shatterhand, who in his day had contemplated thousands of bloodied scalps, refused to accept the Apache's death, why did my bosom friend Adrián Blandón and I accept it? We believed without question the news of our hero's death, because in Matagalpa fiction was the only possible alternative to death from boredom.

Winnetou has died and lies buried beneath grass trodden by wild horses. His sorrel stallion searches for the master who no longer gazes at him from those fiery black eyes accustomed to detail and horizons. The Indian -- half night and half day -- whose silhouette emerges unexpectedly as he moves forward, neither eating nor drinking until circumstances around the campfire permit, will no longer offer his counsel, long in wisdom, ever short in words.

We never saw an acceptable picture of Winnetou, but the only way we could envision him was with perfect oblique and transverse abdominal musculature, a self-controlled nervous system that desensitized the extremities of his feet in the worlds longest marches, marble molars that tore flesh from the charred ribs of buffalo and a thoracic cavity containing a heart the size of a herd of bulls. Was all this now decaying and being consumed by worms? This could not be.
