The present volume is not a record of all modern Mexican artists. Fully aware of the limitations that must inevitably accompany a book of this kind, my only aim has been to convey a general idea cf Mexican painting of our time, and to introduce the reader to the most representative exponents of contemporary Mexican art.

I have tried to include all artists — men born around 1880 — who were responsible for the beginning of, and in a certain sense gave orientation to, our present art movement, as well as the younger artists who have contributed to its more recent development. José Guadalupe Posada, whose work was a forerunner of contemporary social painting in Mexico, is the only exception in this scheme.

Foreign painters who have worked among us temporarily, such as Jean Chariot and Tamiji Kitagawa, are not included; nor are included other painters born in the country, but whose most interesting work has been done outside. In both cases the artists' work has been disconnected from the reality, needs, conflicts and aims of our art movement. The Guatemalan, Carlos Mérida, has been included because the most important part of his work has been accomplished during the evolution of our present artistic period.

The publication is intended neither as a history nor as a critique of contemporary Mexican painting. Such a history — dealing with a cultural expression whose significance in Mexico is comparable only to that of pre-Cortesian sculpture, colonial architecture, and the lyric poetry of the past fifty years — cannot be written when the subject matter is not yet two decades old. On the other hand, a critique could not escape the passions and limitations to be found in present day art.
