To avoid possible misunderstandings about the goals of the dialogue style utilized in much of this volume, some background perspective may be of value.

The present book constitutes the seventh in a series based on dialogues with some of the world's outstanding contributors to the understanding of personality. Designed as a hopefully innovative teaching device, the series was launched in 1957 with completion of dialogues with the late Carl Jung and Ernest Jones supported by a grant from the Fund for the Advancement of Education, and is being continued under a current grant from the National Science Foundation.
