Excerpt

The text of these lectures has been expanded and re-arranged since their delivery, and divided into eight parts instead of six; but the substance is unaltered.

The author's warm thanks are due to Mr. C. R. M. F. Cruttwell for reading the proofs of the whole book, and to Professors W. P. M. Kennedy, Chester Martin, and G. M. Wrong for reading Lecture VII in typescript. He has greatly benefited from their criticisms and suggestions, but none of them, of course, must be saddled with any of his opinions.

The author would also like to take this opportunity of thanking the Provost and Fellows of University College for their courtesy at the time the lectures were delivered.

R. C.

WOOTTON HILL, July, 1930.
