Piero Della Francesca

Excerpt

Piero Della Francesca of all Italian painters, is the one to whom our modern sensibility most readily responds. In the Church of San Francesco at Arezzo and in the museums where they hang, his paintings cast a spell on the visitor; they initiate him into a spiritual realm in which men and women like ourselves walk in the sunlight of eternity. The trend towards abstraction that has transformed art since the beginning of the 20th century finds a noble precedent in Piero della Francesca's taste for contemplation, which he always gratified at the expense of action. Reality and abstraction, humanity and contemplation--these are the ingredients of his art; each holds its own and harmonizes with the others. Master of serene colors, adept in geometry and mathematics, creator of monumental forms, Piero della Francesca stands out, between Masaccio and Leonardo, as one of the great spokesmen of Renaissance humanism.
