Richard L. Solomon began his career as a psychology professor in September, 1947. He received his undergraduate and graduate training at Brown University and taught at Harvard University (Department of Social Relations) and at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is now James M. Skinner University Professor of Science. His career has been a distinguished one punctuated with awards for both teaching and research, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Psychological Association's Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, appointment to the National Academy of Sciences, the Warren Medal for Research from the Society of Experimental Psychologists, and the Society of Sigma Xi's Monie A. Ferst Award for distinguished teaching.

In May, 1983, his students and associates met to honor him in his thirty fifth academic year. His students, associates, coauthors, and even his former teachers assembled in Philadelphia from all over the United States for two days of scientific and social exchange; a few who could not attend sent their salutations. His pre- and postdoctoral students from past years presented the 22 papers which are published in this volume. Although the title of this book may sound ambitious, it reflects the breadth of Solomon's impact through his teaching and research. The diversity of the papers also reflects the enormous range of his thinking.

The first section contains a chapter that provides a bit of history in a retrospective appreciation of the several foci of Solomon's research career. It is laced with anecdotes which give some personal flavor as well. This chapter sets the stage for those that follow and reduces their diversity by providing a degree of historical understanding. Appendices provide a chronological list of Solomon's publications and of his students, with titles of their dissertations.
