Excerpt

The following table is one in a series of mathematical tables prepared by the Mathematical Tables Project conducted by the Work Projects Administration for the City of New York, under the sponsorship of the National Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. This project has been in operation since January 3, 1938, and has been engaged in the preparation and computation of tables according to procedures developed by the project itself and approved by the Work Projects Administration and the sponsoring agency.

Mr. Malcolm Morrow of the Work Projects Administration was instrumental in the preliminary planning of the project. A conference called by Dr. Lyman J. Briggs, Director, National Bureau of Standards, was held to formulate plans. This conference was attended by representatives of the Bureau of Standards, the Committee on Mathematical Tables and Aids to Computation of the National Research Council, the United States Geological Survey, and the Work Projects Administration. The broad outline of work for the first few months was laid out at this conference.

It has been the policy of the project to select for tabulation mathematical functions of fundamental importance in pure and applied mathematics. In the selection of the functions to be tabulated and in the choice of the most useful range and interval of the argument, the project has had the advantage of a continual exchange of views with outstanding mathematicians, physicists, and engineers, both here and abroad.

It would be difficult to mention all the individuals of this project who helped in the preparation of this table. The . . .
