The present volume brings to a close a trilogy on the life and work of Diego Rivera. The pictures reproduced in Portrait of America and Portrait of Mexico are not, in the main, repeated here. I have employed rather paintings and sketches of biographical interest and given preference to works not widely known in the United States. Where I have found it necessary to utilize better-known paintings for the purposes of showing the development of the artist's style, I have, as far as possible, used unpublished details rather than ensembles, the more so because details give a richer insight into the work of a monumental painter and offset somewhat the misrepresentation that mural work must suffer when it is reduced to the confines of a book.
