The usual point of literary biography has been to explain the extraordinary achievement of special individuals—to uncover the forces behind the impulse to write and to bring to light the particulars of their lives transmuted into art. Absent from this picture is any recognition of the ways in which other persons have helped to create the work by virtue of their relationship to the artist and the way they fill out his or her psychic universe. I want to call attention to a particular function that other persons can and do serve in fostering creativity. I call it "mothering the mind," recognizing always that mothers' responses to their children are fashioned from mothers' care, their work, their necessities, and their power.
