The Alchemy of Growth: Practical Insights for Building the Enduring Enterprise

Synopsis

Growth unleashes benefits beyond the economic. It revitalizes organizations and invigorates the people in them, creating energy, a sense of purpose, and the glow of being on a winning team. Yet growth is often elusive, achieved at unacceptable costs, or managed in fits and starts. Based on over three years of research and application at high-performing companies around the world, The Alchemy of Growth is a comprehensive, practical approach to initiating, achieving, and sustaining profitable growth -- today and tomorrow.

Excerpt

In the two years since we completed The Alchemy of Growth, the question of how companies sustain profitable growth has become even more relevant. In the United States, many companies are asking what will it take to keep the speeding growth train on track. In Europe, where the economy has picked up strongly, restructuring is giving way to growth strategy under the influence of deregulation and the introduction of the single currency. In Asia, where the worst days of the economic crisis seem to be over, growth is back on the corporate agenda. And across the globe, incumbents are watching their core businesses come under pressure from attacker ventures on the Internet.

Much to our satisfaction, the book's approach to thinking about sustaining growth has been widely accepted in the marketplace. We have seen our language and ideas help executives focus on the highest priorities and engage in the most productive debates within their management teams. We are more convinced than ever that the growth journey begins with a change in a corporation's language. Executives must start talking as much about where they are heading as about where they have been.

When we wrote the book, we knew that focusing on success stories carried certain risks. Even a growth star finds it hard to stay on top for long. Indeed, several of the companies we studied have faltered since our research was completed. They now face the onerous task of making a new start on their growth journey. Despite their fall, managers can still find important lessons in the way they achieved their former glory.
