Excerpt

This book has been composed to pay NIELS BOHR a tribute of admiration and gratitude on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. For this conventional function we have tried to produce an unconventional Festschrift. The successive chapters, each written by one of BOHR'S older or younger collaborators and friends from many countries, evoke some aspect of the general problems of physics with which he has been most deeply concerned. Such a plan inevitably entails a somewhat arbitrary selection; and, alas, there are other gaps in it which cruelly remind us of friends too soon departed. Imperfect as it is, our choice of subjects affords a fairly connected survey of the development of atomic and nuclear physics in its most salient features: a result in no way surprising for the workers in these fields, who are wont first and foremost to look to BOHR for guidance and inspiration, and whose warmest wish it is to enjoy his benevolent leadership in the common quest for many years to come.
