I should like to take this opportunity to thank all those who, in their various ways, have helped to make this edition possible. Among many others, I am particularly grateful to the Rev. M. B. McNamee, S.J., of St. Louis University, who, years ago, first aroused my interest in the Life of Wolsey; to Professor F. P. Wilson of Oxford University for his whole-hearted encouragement and many helpful suggestions; and to Mr. N. R. Ker, University Reader in Palaeography at Oxford, who first taught me to read Renaissance script and who supervised my transcription of Egerton 2402. I am greatly indebted to the many librarians who have helped me in my search for manuscripts. I wish to thank particularly Dr. R. W. Hunt of the Bodleian Library, the authorities of the British Museum, Mr. H. W. Parke of Trinity College, Dublin, Mr. P. I. King of Lamport Hall, Northampton, Miss Brunskill of the York Minster Library, the Duke of Northumberland (for permission to examine a microfilm copy of his MS. of the Life), Dr. Giles E. Dawson of the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the staffs of the Yale and Harvard Libraries for their constant co-operation. Miss Nelly McNeill O'Farrell and Miss Mabel Mills have given me invaluable aid in my work with the London records and Professors Charles T. Prouty and Helge Kökeritz of Yale have supplied me with many helpful hints. I am most deeply grateful to Professor Davis Harding of Yale for his kindly, albeit forceful and searching, criticism and to Dr. C. T. Onions, who helped me to put the glossary in its final form. Finally, I wish to express my thanks to the Honorary Secretary of the Early English Text Society, Mr. R. W. Burchfield, for his patient guidance in all the various stages of editorial work that have preceded this edition, to the members of the Council of the Society for their helpful criticisms, and to my wife for her constant and careful proof-reading of the final manuscript.
