When this volume has been published and distributed the purpose for which our Committee was formed will have been accomplished. That purpose was not merely to pay further tribute to one who had already been widely honored in life and at his death; it was also to make available for this generation and for posterity— and particularly for the youth of this and other lands—a faithful and intimate life story of a truly great American about whom strangely little was known, considering the world-wide eminence he had attained.

The carrying out of this purpose has been a labor of love and pride to those concerned in it. Frankly, I was glad indeed to accept the chairmanship of the Memorial Committee because of my intimate acquaintance and close friendship with Alex Legge , my association with him in public service, and my affectionate admiration of his personality and character. Now it is my further privilege to set forth in these lines some account of the Memorial Committee , its plans and its work.
