Any new book dealing with some aspect of the Arab-Israeli conflict requires an explanation as to why the author believes it was worth writing and why anyone should bother to read it. Writings about the subject abound and it is difficult to imagine what one might have to say about it that has not already been put on paper somewhere. Yet the fact remains that, notwithstanding the enormous literature on the subject published over the last forty years, there is scarcely an issue of international significance that is as poorly understood, by both laymen and statesmen alike, as the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is an issue that seems to preclude dispassionate objectivity. Why this is so should be a question of some considerable interest. It is not, however, the immediate concern of this book.

The burden of this brief work is to attempt to cut through much of the polemical fog that has beset key aspects of the Arab‐ Israeli issue by recalling the essential background of the problem in its real rather than imaginary political context. For it is only by understanding the real issues behind the Arab-Israeli conflict that there can be any hope of ever finding a way of resolving it, rather than merely papering it over with pious and well-intentioned but largely irrelevant and impracticable solutions.
