The Princess Marries the Page was written when I was an undergraduate at Vassar College, that is to say, it was finished then; I had begun it several years before. It is my earliest attempt at play-writing, one of my earliest literary efforts in any direction, and but for an accident would have been published some thirteen years ago. The accident to which I refer was my losing of the manuscript.

There were very likely several copies of the manuscript in existence at the moment when I discovered that I had mislaid my own. The play had been performed by the students at Vassar, and by the alumnae of the Bennett School at Millbrook; later it had been produced by the Provincetown Players in New York; quite possibly some of the actors still held copies of it. And even had all the copies been destroyed I could doubtless have rewritten the whole thing from memory.
