Excerpt

The purpose of the Western Studies Center, Desert Research Institute, is to foster research in the behavioral and historical sciences by faculty members of the University of Nevada System. The Center, founded in 1964 by interested University faculty members, has as its focus of concern, western North America, although its programs of research have often gone well beyond these geographic bounds. To facilitate the purpose of the Center, the present publication series was established in 1966.

The Center staff and its faculty advisory board are extremely pleased to include in its publication series this distinguished collection of papers by Stanford M. Lyman. Individually, each of these papers has made important contributions to our understanding of Asian American sociology and history. Collectively, they represent a major contribution to Asian American studies, as well as to the broader topic of ethnic relations in western America; they should form a base-line for future studies in these subjects.
