Introduction: An Illusion Revisited

To what did it point that 1983 was proclaimed "year of the Bible" by President Ronald Reagan? Or that the second-generation, public-opinion surveyor turned Evangelical enthusiast, George Gallup, Jr., said, "the decade to come will be Bible-centered, indeed"? Can supernaturalistic religion really play a major rôle in the lives of contemporary enlightened Americans? To what extent are the politicized Evangelicals, the television preachers, and the other sensational features of the Evangelical subculture that are made conspicuous by the mass media, representative of conservative Christianity in America? Who buys all those Bibles in modern, accessible translation that fill shelves in every bookstore and sell literally by the ton, year after year? And what do the people who buy them do with them?
