In 1948-1949 the Department of Economics at Indiana University sponsored a series of special lectures on economic theory. These lectures, delivered by James E. Earley,Lawrence H. Seltzer,Kenneth E. Boulding , andAllan G. Grunchy, were published in 1950 under the title of Economic Theory in Review as part of the Social Science Series at Indiana University.

Having in mind the sesquicentennial of Indiana University and the success of the earlier departmental venture, I proposed another departmental volume. This time, however, it seemed more appropriate to attempt a survey of some unsettled questions or current controversies and their origin in some of the major divisions of economics. At the same time, as part of the recognition of 150 years of existence, the contributors to the volume, I felt, should be scholars at Indiana University. Birthday celebrations may perhaps, excuse some degree of parochialism. Accordingly, I asked certain faculty members in the Department representing several of the major fields of economics to prepare original papers that summarized or surveyed the leading issues in their respective areas of expertise.
