In 1947 the Department of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh initiated a series of yearly conferences dealing with current advances and possible future developments in an active area of psychology. The present chapters represent the tenth published volume of papers presented by many of this decade's outstanding psychologists. We, of course, are also pleased that the Conference is a part of Pittsburgh's Bicentennial Program. It makes it particularly appropriate to present the ideas of some distinguished scholars about the past decade of psychology and current theoretical developments in the field.

This year the Department was primarily interested in the appraisal of advances currently being made in psychological theory. Conference participants were then chosen to represent four areas of psychology; physiological, learning, thinking and problem solving, and personality. Most of the papers deal with these topics although the invited speakers were free to suggest their individual titles. There was an occasional disparity between the suggested topic, the presented paper, and the completed manuscript.

Three additional contributions by Dennis, Cartwright, and Kelly were presented at the previous conference, and we are pleased to present them here.

The papers do not entirely represent the conference since they do not include the discussion elicited from the audience and the other speakers. They do represent, however, a high-level conference and a stimulating experience for all who attended.
