The motivation behind the publication of these two volumes of the Handbook of Cognitive Social, and Neuropsychological Aspects of Learning Disabilities requires some explanation. Several years ago, upon returning from a much needed vacation full of energy and ambition, I discovered a letter from Larry Erlbaum. He invited me to write a book summarizing my research on learning disabilities. Instinctively, I felt that such a venture would be of interest to very few individuals, as those working in the same area of LD as I probably already knew of this work and those not working in this area probably had no intention of ever doing so. Therefore, instead of writing a book exclusively about my own research and theories (a small book, by necessity), I proposed to tackle a much larger problem: editing a Handbook comprised of thematic groupings of important research, groupings followed by theoretical/integrative commentaries written by renowned experts. The enterprise was guided from the very beginning by a special vision. I spent the better part of the first year reading in research areas in which I had not read previously so as to line up prospective authors and commentators. The remainder of the first year and the entire second year of the project saw the writing and delivery of chapters and commentaries, the checking with contributors in an attempt to ensure the factual nature of the commentaries, and the copyediting of the entire two volumes of the Handbook.

Certainly many volumes, some of which are very good, already deal with various aspects of learning disabilities, and one or two more edited volumes might seem to be just that -- one or two more edited volumes. But the Handbook was conceived out of a vision unlike those that motivated other edited volumes. The staff at Lawrence Erlbaum Associates and I wanted to assem-
