These pages do not pretend to give an exhaustive critical analysis nor a comprehensive æsthetic critique of ROBERT SCHUMANN'S works, but simply his biography. I have confined myself to the close inspection of such compositions as mark important and decisive moments in his development. Besides this, particular examination is made of that field of art in which Schumann labored.

It is in many respects desirable to determine the facts of Schumann's life. Already, all sorts of inexact and erroneous reports concerning his history have been spread abroad, both verbally and in writing; therefore an impartial statement, founded on carefully-sifted oral and documental accounts, seems necessary, and at once, in order that any errors unconsciously committed by me may be corrected by contemporaries. I have abstained from all controversy in this account: the facts speak for themselves. A history of the artistic development of this significant character seems of the rarest historico- musical interest; for it gives a picture of an artist's life, with its struggles and labors, repeated in its outlines in other characters of the present time, as it stands in close connection and reciprocal action with the modern aims and intellectual emotions of music. And Robert Schumann was so rare a nature, that his creative powers, especially at the outset, can be fully understood and correctly judged only by a knowledge of his life and its manifold conditions.

Our tone-poet himself says, "It is impertinent to judge a whole life by a single action; since the moment which threatens to overthrow a system may often be explained and justified." And farther on, "With some timidity, I express my opinion of works, with whose forerunners I am unacquainted. I would gladly know somewhat of a composer's school, his youthful views, his exemplars, ay, even of his actions, the circumstances of his life, -- in a word, some-
