The presence of so many footnotes in a book intended primarily for the general reader may cause surprise. I should have been glad to dispense with them if I could have referred throughout to some comprehensive and authoritative work on the subject. But for want of any fully documented study of Purcell or any complete account of Restoration music as a whole I had no other course but to give all the sources of my information. There is, after all, a satisfaction in knowing the authority for even the most familiar statements; and no one is likely to feel regret if familiar statements are sometimes shown to rest on very flimsy foundations. In discussing particular aspects of Purcell's work and period I have had the advantage of several scholarly works which I have been content to quote as sufficient authority. My debt to Mr. Godfrey Arkwright, the late William Barclay Squire, Professor Dent, Professor Nicoll and others will be sufficiently apparent from the following pages.
