The Families Studied in the preceding two chapters the broad demographic setting for the research problem and the strategies for its execution have been specified. Before opening up the book to a discussion of the findings it is both timely and appropriate to provide first a panoramic picture of the cooperating families who have shared their hospitality with the study so selflessly. They are the actors of our research drama whose attempts to deal with the problems of family limitation we have been permitted to observe. We will begin with an overview of family life among the lower classes of Puerto Rico, drawing from a variety of sources, to place our families in clearer context. Next we will look at the community backgrounds, conditions of living, and ecological distribution of the cooperating families. Third, we will examine their value orientations and philosophical outlooks; and finally, we will conclude with a picture of their marital and family constellations as social organizations structured to achieve overriding family objectives.

OVERVIEW OF FAMILY LIFE IN PUERTO RICO

PUERTO RICAN families have not been ignored by observers and writers during the past decade. Our problem of description is not so much one of composition as one of selecting and condensing a compact statement from the millions of words that have been written about Puerto Rican families.
