The Hanes Foundation was established to aid the study of the origin and development of the book. This particular publication is a list of books printed in the fifteenth century. No more satisfactory method of arranging these books to facilitate the study of the development of printing has been devised than that used by Robert Proctor in his work with the incunabula in the British Museum and the Bodleian Library. The arrangement is chronological, based on the earliest date of printing, and grouped under country, town, and printer. The Proctor number appears at the right of each entry. When a book is not found in the Proctor list, it is interpolated decimally (as 412.5). In a few cases more recent investigations have assigned books to presses different from those designated by Proctor. In such instances the old Proctor number has been retained and reference made to the new interpolation (as 3240 = 2598.5).

The number on the left of each entry is the University of North Carolina's serial number by which the books are arranged on the shelves. This numbering includes extra copies and fragments. In the study of the printed page a single leaf is often as important as a whole book; consequently, fragments and incomplete copies have been noted. Citation of bibliographical references has been kept at a minimum. The Hain, Copinger, Reichling series are noted first. These are followed by British Museum and Gesamtkatalog. Generally, when one or two of the above are missing, other references are added. No attempt has been made to set off by parentheses or brackets dates, places, or names of printers which do not actually appear in the book. In cases where the dates have been established by . . .
