Excerpt

In the regrouping of the COLLECTED PAPERS, the present volume has proved to be the most miscellaneous, and can indeed be termed 'Clinical' only a potiori. The word 'clinical', however, as the present writer has expounded at length elsewhere, has greatly widened in its meaning of late years, and has now come mainly to indicate a certain characteristic mode of approach to various problems -- psychological, medical, and others.

The third, forthcoming volume will consist of five long case-histories studied psycho-analytically, and is thus the most valuable as regards actual clinical material. The fourth volume will contain a number of papers on 'Metapsychology', together with most of those dealing with the application of psycho-analysis to non-medical topics.

The present volume contains all the other papers written between 1906 and 1924. Many are purely clinical in the narrower sense, such as Hysterical Phantasies, Types of Nosogenesis, Disposition to Obsessional Neurosis, Case of Homosexuality in a Woman, etc.; others concern matters of wider interest, such as the ascertainment of truth in legal proceedings, the sexual enlightenment of children, children's lying, etc., while the first application of psycho-analysis to the study of character-development will also be found here.

A word should be said about two groups of papers which are more homogeneous. The last four in the first section were written only this year, 1924, and one of them has not yet even appeared in German; Professor Freud, however, kindly supplied the manuscript of it to the Institute for the purposes of this translation. These are all written on the basis of his recent important brochure entitled Das Ich und Das Es, of which a separate translation will shortly appear, and they are so recondite that the reader is advised to postpone the study of them until he is familiar with the contents of that book.

The second section contains all those papers relating directly to Technique; six of them were published in a group in the Zeitschrift.
