Latin America is ready for democracy. Its people have fought bitter battles in recent years to prove this fact. However, the struggle to establish democratic government on a firm basis still goes on.

We feel that this struggle deserves the support of the people of the United States. It is to the discredit of the citizens and government of this country that all too frequently in recent years the power and prestige of the United States have been thrown into the balance on the side of the dictatorships. This has contributed to today's major crisis in relations between the United States and Latin America.

If good relations are again to be established between the two Americas, the people of the United States must be made aware of the facts concerning the struggle for democracy in Latin America. In the pages that follow we have attempted to present both the historical roots of this battle and some of the recent incidents in it. We hope that it will make at least a small contribution toward the "agonizing reappraisal" of United States . . .
