Four of the following papers have appeared before. That on Aristotle's Definition of Moral Virtue and Plato's Account of Justice in the Soul is reprinted, with some additions and alterations, from the issue of Philosophy for April 1934. That on Purposive Action was published in two parts in the Hibbert Jourhal, January and April 1934, and 'A Comparison of Kant's Idealism with that of Berkeley' was delivered as the Annual Philosophical Lecture on the Henriette Hertz Trust at the British Academy in 1929; slight changes have been made in both of these. The Essay on 'The Concept of Evolution'was delivered as the Herbert Spencer Lecture in the, University of Oxford in 1924, and is reprinted almost exactly as published then. I have to thank respectively the Editors of Philosophy and of the Hibbert Journal, the Council of the British Academy, and the Delegates of the Oxford University Press for permission to reprint them. The remaining seven are new. But the first five develop theses which formed part of a course of Lectures onPlato Republic which I used to give at New College, Oxford, and I fear that the argument of III is to some extent drawn upon again in VI; while the two onKant Kritik of Pure Reason, work out, inter alia, the line of thought suggested in the British Academy Lecture.
