Eliyahu Ashtor The Jews of Moslem Spain is a classic. It was published in two volumes in Hebrew in the years 1960 and 1966, and its English translation appeared in three volumes under The Jewish Publication Society's imprint in Philadelphia in the years 1973, 1979, and 1984. The work's inclusion in The Jewish Publication Society's list was an indication of its acceptance by the establishment, in the best sense of that expression, and of the status both of the subject itself and of the author. Moslem Spain was an important area of Jewish history still in need of extended scholarly treatment, both for a specialist and for a lay audience; Eliyahu Ashtor possessed precisely the qualities necessary to present this subject to both audiences.
Ashtor was born in Vienna in 1914, of Galician parentage . . .
