"How should we educate our daughters?" is a question which has bristled with controversy throughout our history. In recent years this controversy has flared up with renewed vigor. The whole field of education is in a state of ferment. But if we are uncertain about how to educate men, our confusion with regard to women is doubly great.

What are we educating women for? To raise this question is to face the whole problem of woman's role in society. We are uncertain about the ends of women's education precisely because the status of women in our society is fraught with contradictions and confusion.

Our deep concern with this problem is apparent from the avalanche of books and articles and the continuous flow of words over the radio and in lecture halls on the subject of woman's role. A certain persistent theme is emerging out of this din of voices. We have been repeatedly told in recent years that our predicament is due to the feminist movement for sex equality. Instead of making women proud to be women, the feminists glorified masculine aptitudes and masculine goals. Women were urged to imitate men when they should have striven to develop . . .
