Synopsis

Excerpt

The fifth Strawberry Hill conference on medieval knighthood was held at St Mary's College from 9-11 April 1990. The papers there delivered are here printed substantially as delivered, although mention should be made of the excellent range of slides with which Adrian Ailes illustrated his lecture on heraldry.

As usual, the thanks of the organisers and editors are due to many individuals and institutions. For permission to print illustrations and diagrams in this volume we are grateful to the Bodleian Library, English Heritage, the Society for Medieval Archaeology and the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. Dr Richard Barber and his staff at Boydell and Brewer have once again been models of helpful efficiency at every stage of production.

At St Mary's we are indebted, as always, to the Bursar and his staff for their assistance, and most especially to Sheila Peever for her excellent catering. Above all, however, everybody who has attended this conference over the years would surely wish to join in thanks, regrettably for the last time, to the Principal, the Very Reverend Desmond Beirne, C.M., who is about to move on to wider responsibilities within the Province. He has constantly encouraged the holding of this, as of other conferences, not least by his generous hospitality to participants. We hope he may feel that his support has been justified.
