Many books have been written on modern Turkey, more perhaps than on any other Muslim country of the Middle East. The progress and effect of Atatürk's drastic reforms of the political, economic, social and cultural structure of his country have been thoroughly investigated. Little, however, is known in the West about the spiritual foundations of the Kemalist revolution. The period preceding the establishment of the Turkish Republic, the rule of the Young Turks, is still largely unexplored, especially in its internal and ideological aspects. Yet it was during this turbulent decade of Turkish history (1908-18) that the modern national movement was born. Among the intellectual leaders of this movement Ziya GU00F6kalp occupies the central place.

Although GU00F6kalp is regarded by many as the spiritual father of Turkish nationalism and as one of the outstanding Turkish thinkers in modern times, his life and teachings have not yet been the subject of any comprehensive and objective study. In Turkey several books have been written on GU00F6kalp, but nearly all of them are biased and uncritical. The work of Enver Behnan Şapolyo, which contains the longest study on GU00F6kalp in Turkish, does not give much more than excerpts from his writings and the memoirs of his friends. şapolyo does not expound GU00F6kalp's theories systematically, nor does he express any critical opinion of his own. Ali Nüzhet, GU00F6kalp's son-in-law, supplies many details of his life, but says little of his teaching. In the preface to his selections from GU00F6kalp writings Hilmi Ziya Ülken has some valuable remarks on his teachings, and it is a pity that he did not pursue this subject further. The majority of the articles on GU00F6kalp which have been published in Turkish newspapers and periodicals since his death contain only the stock eulogies along with the already . . .
