This book is an outgrowth of the Twentieth Conference on Early American History held on the Rutgers College campus of Rutgers University on October 7-8, 1966 as a part of the observance of the Rutgers Bicentennial, 1766-1966. At that time the editors of this volume were members of the Rutgers University faculty, and they acted as codirectors of the Conference. The theme of the Conference was "Anglo-American Political Relations, 1675-1775." Papers were presented by Richard S. Dunn, Stanley Nider Katz, David Alan Williams, and Michael G. Kammen. In revised form these papers appear as articles in this book. In order to round out the treatment of the subject, additional articles by David S. Lovejoy, Thomas C. Barrow, John Shy, Joseph E. Illick, and Alison Gilbert Olson were solicited for inclusion in the present volume.

We wish to acknowledge the contributions of the following persons who did so much to assure the success of the Conference: the members of the State University Bicentennial Commission; Richard Schlatter, Provost and Vice President of Rutgers University; Van Wie Ingham, the Rutgers Bicentennial Coordinator; Madison E. Weidner, Associate Dean of the University Extension Division of Rutgers; Lester J. Cappon, Director of the Institute of Early American History and Culture; and Mr.George W. Franz.
