Parents are fortunate indeed to have this firsthand elaboration of the "bonding process" from such distinguished clinicians and researchers as Drs.Klaus and Kennell, together with Phyllis Klaus.I can remember when Marshall Klaus and John Kennell conceived of their now-classic research to change delivery practices all over the United States. At that time, the delivery of a normal, healthy infant to a normal, healthy woman was treated as a pathological medical event and conducted as if it were a surgical procedure subject to dangerous consequences.

In the process of devising sterile, safe delivery techniques for mothers and of developing the technology and practices for safe and effective caring for newborns, we created an aura of pathology and medical control around the entire delivery process.
