The thousands of disenfranchised dads I've met—and society's indifference to their plight—created and sustained the inspiration for this book. My need to share what I've learned can be traced back to hundreds of encounters very similar to a modest gathering that occurred on Father's Day, 1993....

Outside, the suburban park was filled with families playing in the summer sunshine. Dads and moms and kids were flying kites, slinging Frisbees, scaling jungle gyms, roller-blading, skipping rope, biking, triking, tossing baseballs back and forth.

In a poorly lit, badly ventilated classroom in the basement of the park's community center, a quiet Father's Day gathering was under way.A dozen completely average men sipped vending-machine coffee and shared sad, soul-wrenching tales of loss, loneliness, anger, and pain.

The men were divorced dads. All had been forced to the periphery of their children's lives, excluded from parental decisions, and stripped of the respect and moral authority inherent in a normal father-child relationship.

Most of these fathers could not even see their children regularly. "I called my ex-wife Thursday to see what time I could pick my daughter up for the weekend," said Ben. "She laughed and hung up."

Robert nodded knowingly. "My wife took my kids to Florida in April," he said. "I'm not even sure where they are. . . ."
