This book is an account of my activities in the establishment and early years of the Tennessee Valley Authority and of my sustained effort to develop and carry through to fruition the purposes of the TVA, especially those somewhat unconventional purposes that President Franklin D. Roosevelt emphasized so strongly in messages to Congress and in private discussions with me.

I have also undertaken to express my own life purposes, particularly as they relate to social concepts in practice in the TVA. Underlying this account of my stewardship as chairman of the Authority is a discussion of the ideals, objectives, and patterns of operation that I had hoped might characterize it and be adopted eventually by other governmental agencies.I have, in addition, pointed out some developments during the later years of the TVA that represent a continuation or renewal of my hopes and intentions for the Authority.
