A Short History of Wisconsin

Excerpt

This short history of Wisconsin was originally intended as a basic introduction to the subject for use in a correspondence course offered by the Extension Division of the state university. As such it should be used along with James I. Clark's sixteen pamphlet series, The Chronicles of Wisconsin, plus as much collateral reading in the sources or in scholarly monographs as might be available. The work is not intended to be a comprehensive history of Wisconsin, but rather a brief survey of the highlights presented in compact and readable form.

Similarly, the suggested further readings at the end of each chapter are only to lead the reader to some specific useful information. The list is merely a starting point and does not include all of the works consulted for writing the book. For example, a number of very useful unpublished doctoral dissertations and master's theses in the Library of the University of Wisconsin provided much valuable information and insight, but such titles were not included in the references because they are not readily available to most students or other readers. Serious students of Wisconsin history should make use of Leroy Schlinkert's Sub ject Bibliography of Wisconsin History . . .
