Excerpt

The success of the first edition prompted the undertaking of this second revised and enlarged version. Its scope and approach are the same as that of the original work. Changes, however, win be found on almost every page; approximately one-third of the material is entirely new; and the book has been completely up-dated through January 1968. The procedural innovations are: three separate indexes, an informational chart of all Supreme Court justices appointed to date, and the categorized classification of bibliographies I and IV. The set of bibliographies, which has been expanded to include more than 3000 listings, represents the most extensive compilation of its kind extant as an appendix to any book.

I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to a host of colleagues whose thoughtful criticism and support of the earlier edition encouraged me to undertake the second. I should like to add a special expression of appreciation for my research assistant, Judy F. Lang, who helped so much.
