This book is based on extensive revisions of selected papers and discussions presented by members of the panels "One Hundred Years of Korean-American Relations, 1882-1982," at two academic conventions: the Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association (December 28, 1982, in Washington, D.C.) and the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies (April 3, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois). Both panels were organized to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the commencement of Korean-American relations, which occurred in 1882 upon conclusion of the Korean-American (Shufeldt or Chemulp'o) Treaty. The AHA panel was cosponsored by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. In addition to Wayne Patterson and Yur-Bok Lee, Fred Harvey Harrington was also a member of both panels.

One of the editors (Wayne Patterson), who served as the chairperson of the AHA panel and a discussant of the AAS panel, and Hilary Conroy, who served as the commentator of the AHA panel, jointly provide chapter 1. In it, they not only comment on the contributions of the other five chapters but also elucidate the common themes of the authors of this book with an all-encompassing perspective, enabling readers to comprehend the unity of the period.

Chapter 2, contributed by the other editor (Yur-Bok Lee), examines Korean-American relations between 1882 and 1905 from the viewpoint of Korea as well as that of the United States, with due emphasis on the diplomatic role played by King Kojong (emperor, 1897-1907).
