"Don't!"

If there is one word in the English language that most young people absolutely, positively cannot stand to hear, it is "don't." Don't do this, don't do that. Don't go into the water, don't eat that junk, don't associate with that person, don't, don't, don't!

"Don't" is a command, a warning not to do something. Sometimes it can be soft-sounding, as in, "Don't you think you should try to be a bit more considerate?" But most times "don't" means do not . . . emphatically.

And that is the reasons for the "don't," and enough information to help you understand those reasons. You see, just telling you not to do something is only part of the advice, and it rarely works.

This is a book about three substances -- alcohol, drugs, and tobacco -- that can hurt you badly. It is about what they are, how they work, and what can be done to prevent . . .
